Why do honesty and integrity matter? If you’ve ever worked with a real estate agent, did you ever feel they weren’t completely transparent? Maybe you trusted them when they insisted that renovating your fixer upper would be easy, or that your offer wouldn’t be competitive if you didn’t purchase the house in ‘as-is’ condition. Or they insisted that the Seller’s pre-listing inspections were very thorough, so it wasn’t necessary to perform your own inspections. Then after moving in, you experienced all sorts of problems.
Here’s the hidden truth: the profit-driven interests of agents aren’t completely aligned with the interests of their clients. What it takes for an agent to be successful — closing lots of deals as quickly as possible — is often the opposite of what it takes for clients to get the best results: lots of time and effort researching opportunities, touring properties, performing due diligence, and going above and beyond to prepare listings for sale.
Please consider my humble advice: don’t be impressed by an agent solely because of their sales history or social media ‘presence’ — an agent who sold $100 Million of real estate last year is not a good agent necessarily, and someone who is great on social media isn’t always great in real life. Please interview multiple agents from different brokerages — get to know them, their processes, what motivates them and, most importantly, evaluate their honesty and integrity. Check their references — were past clients impressed with qualities such as trustworthiness and transparency?
